Our Approach

The journey to provide authentic Victorian restoration with 21st century sustainable living was an interesting and enjoyable challenge.  With the client we researched and shared many precedents, and visited exemplary houses such as The Sambourne family home, in London W8

We have promoted ecological principles and used our passivhaus experience, although chose not to aim for specific targets.

Our Process

The house was in a completely derelict state, having been formerly used as house of multi-occupancy.  It was fully renovated back to the brick external walls, and the roof structure replaced.

Approvals for the 6m extension were negotiated to contain the family kitchen-dining room with flowing connection to the outside.  A self contained lower ground floor flat was created to the front, also having its own private rear terrace.

With replacement double glazed windows, airtighness was achieved by pargeing the brick and using airtight tape for sealing windows to structure. Significant thermal insulation is installed, with MVHR used on the upper bedroom levels for thermal comfort and air quality.  Rainwater harvesting tank is installed under the rear stone-paved terrace.   Solar thermal panels were installed on the main roof, for hot water and under-floor heating.

A 50mm strong cement render had been applied to the front elevation, this was removed and brickwork restored by a specialist brick-worker, using lime mortar.

 

The Results

A quirky happy home with natural materials and hand-made live-in kitchen.
